How to Clean Different Floor Types With a Vacuum Cleaner

How to Clean Different Floor Types With a Vacuum Cleaner

Different floors need different vacuum settings. The wrong head can leave dirt behind. Too much suction can damage the surface. Most Sri Lankan homes have tiles, marble, vinyl, rugs, and carpets. Each floor type needs its own method.

Vacuuming smooth floors: tiles, marble, and vinyl

Use a smooth-floor suction head on tiles, marble, and vinyl. Switch off the rotating brush roll first if your vacuum has one. The brush does not help much on smooth floors. It can scatter fine dust. It can scratch polished marble. It can also leave marks on vinyl.

Most cordless vacuums have a floor mode switch. Some models have a separate smooth-floor head. Use the head without the brush roll on tiles and marble.

Move the vacuum slowly and steadily. Fast passes can miss fine dust on tiled floors. One slow pass usually cleans better than two fast ones.

Pay attention to grout lines. Fine dust and grit settle there easily. Run a crevice tool or another narrow attachment along the grout every few weeks. A flat floor head often misses these gaps.

Marble needs extra care. It can scratch easily. Check the underside of the vacuum head before you start. Sand or grit can stick there. That grit can drag across the marble and leave marks.

Vinyl is easier to clean. A normal smooth-floor head with medium suction works well. Lower the power near walls if needed. Strong suction can lift the edges of vinyl sheets.

If you are comparing models, check vacuum cleaners with multiple floor attachments at Xclusive. The attachments can vary from one model to another.

Vacuuming rugs and carpets without damaging the pile

Use the beater brush head on rugs and carpets. The rotating brush pulls out dust, hair, and debris from deeper in the fibres. Without it, you often clean only the surface.

Vacuum in one direction first. Then vacuum the same area in the opposite direction. This helps you catch dirt sitting at different angles in the pile.

Reduce the suction on delicate or hand-woven rugs. Use the gentlest setting your vacuum has. High power can pull at the fibres. It can also weaken the backing.

Lift small rugs before you vacuum them. Clean both sides of the rug. Then vacuum the floor underneath. Put the rug back after that. A lot of dust collects under rugs.

Check the brush roll after you finish. Hair and thread wrap around it quickly. That reduces its cleaning power.

Using attachments for furniture, curtains, and stairs

The right attachment helps a lot. A crevice tool, upholstery tool, and flexible hose let you clean places that a floor head cannot clean well.

Use the crevice tool for corners. Use it along walls. Use it between sofa cushions. Use it around skirting boards. Its narrow shape pulls dust out of tight spaces.

Use the upholstery tool on sofas, chairs, pillowcases, curtains, and mattresses. The soft bristles lift surface dust. They do not pull the fabric.

Use the flexible hose on stairs. Hold the main unit in one hand. Guide the hose with the other hand. Start at the top. Work down to the bottom. This keeps you from stepping on the area you already cleaned.

A full-size vacuum can feel awkward in a car. Tight spaces can also be hard to clean with it. A handheld vacuum cleaner is often easier to use there.

Curtains need regular cleaning in Sri Lankan homes. They collect dust quickly. This happens more near open windows. Use the upholstery tool once a month. A light pass helps control dust buildup.

If you want one machine for all these jobs, look at a vacuum cleaner with the right attachment set. Make sure it includes a crevice tool and an upholstery head before you buy.
