What Room Size Do You Need for a Dehumidifier in Sri Lanka?

What Room Size Do You Need for a Dehumidifier in Sri Lanka?

Choosing the wrong dehumidifier size is a common mistake. A small unit can run all day. The room can still stay damp. A large unit costs more money. The best size depends on your room and Sri Lanka’s humidity.

      How dehumidifier capacity is measured

Dehumidifier capacity shows how much water the unit removes in 24 hours. A 10 litre model can remove up to 10 litres a day. A 20 litre model can remove up to 20 litres a day. A higher number means the unit can handle more moisture.

This matters more in Sri Lanka than in cooler countries. Indoor humidity can stay high for days during the monsoon. A bedroom at 85% humidity holds much more moisture than a drier room.

That is why UK and European sizing guides often miss the mark here. Those guides usually assume humidity of about 50% to 70%. In Sri Lanka, humidity often stays between 80% and 90% in wet months.

A good rule is to size up by about 30% to 50% here. A standard guide may suggest a 10 litre unit for a 15 square metre bedroom. In Sri Lanka, you will usually need about 13 to 15 litres a day.

      Matching capacity to room size

A bedroom between 12 and 20 square metres usually needs a 10 to 12 litre unit. A living room between 25 and 40 square metres needs a 16 to 20 litre model. A larger open space above 50 square metres needs a 25 to 30 litre unit.

A standard bedroom usually works well with a 10 to 12 litre unit. This size can keep the space comfortable in normal weather. It may run longer during the southwest monsoon from May to September. It should still handle the room.

A living room or dining area needs more capacity. These rooms hold more air and more moisture. For spaces between 25 and 40 square metres, a 16 to 20 litre unit is a safer choice. It can lower humidity faster. It can also hold that level more easily.

A 20 to 25 litre unit makes more sense for open plan spaces between 40 and 60 square metres. This helps in Colombo apartments with one large living, dining, and kitchen area.

A 20 to 30 litre model is usually the best choice if you want one unit for the whole apartment. It gives enough capacity for different rooms. A continuous drain option also helps. You do not need to empty the tank so often.

One unit is enough for most apartments if you move it to the dampest room first. You usually do not need one machine for every room. Start with the bedroom, bathroom area, or any space where you notice damp smells, condensation, or mould.

See where to place a dehumidifier for maximum effect. It explains how to position the unit for better airflow and better results.

How to tell if your current unit is undersized

A dehumidifier is probably too small if the tank fills quickly. The room may still feel damp. It is also too small if it runs for hours and misses your target humidity. Mould that keeps coming back is another strong sign.

A tank can fill in four to six hours in very humid weather. That can be normal. The real problem starts when you empty the tank many times and the room humidity still barely drops.

Most dehumidifiers show the current humidity and your target setting. Close the room and let the machine run. If it still cannot reach 55% after many hours, the unit is likely too small for that space.

Mould is another clue. You may run the dehumidifier every day. If mould still returns, the unit is not removing enough moisture.

A continuous drain hose can make daily use easier. You connect the hose to the drain outlet. Then the water flows into a floor drain or sink. The unit can keep running when the tank is full.
