How to Clean Different Floor Types With a Vacuum Cleaner

How to Clean Different Floor Types With a Vacuum Cleaner

Different floor surfaces need different vacuum settings. Use the wrong head or suction, and you can damage the floor or miss dust. This guide covers common surfaces in Sri Lankan homes.

Vacuuming smooth floors: tiles, marble, and vinyl

Use a smooth floor suction head on tiles, marble, and vinyl. Turn off the beater brush if your vacuum has one. Rotating bristles do not help on smooth floors. They scatter debris, scratch polished marble, and can mark vinyl. The suction head does the work.

Most cordless vacuums have a floor mode switch or a separate smooth floor head. Use the one without the brush roll for tiles and marble.

Move the vacuum head slowly and steadily. If you move too fast across a tiled floor, the suction may miss fine dust. One slow pass works better than two fast ones.

Pay attention to grout lines. Grout collects fine dust and grit between tiles. Use a crevice tool or narrow attachment along the grout every few weeks. A standard flat head skips over this area.

Marble floors need extra care. Marble can scratch and it also absorbs spills. Make sure the underside of the suction head is clean before you vacuum. Grit on the head can drag across the surface.

Vinyl floors are easy to vacuum. A standard smooth floor head with medium suction handles them well. High suction can lift the edges of vinyl sheets near walls. Use medium power near the edges.

Vacuuming rugs and carpets without damaging the pile

Use the beater brush head on rugs and carpets. The rotating brush lifts the fibres and pulls out dust, debris, and pet hair that suction alone cannot reach. Without the brush, you only clean the surface. The brush gets into the pile.

Vacuum rugs in one direction, then go back in the other direction. Two passes in a cross pattern reach debris that sits in different parts of the pile.

On delicate or hand woven rugs, reduce suction and use a gentler setting. Full suction on a thin rug can pull at the fibres or damage the backing.

Lift small rugs before you vacuum them. Vacuum the rug on both sides, then vacuum the floor below it before you put it back. Dust and debris collect under rugs very quickly.

Check the brush roll after you vacuum rugs. Hair and thread can wrap around it and reduce its power. Remove them before the next use.

Using attachments for furniture, curtains, and stairs

Vacuum attachments extend what your machine can do. The crevice tool, upholstery tool, and flexible hose handle furniture, curtains, and stairs. The right attachment cleans better than forcing a floor head into corners or onto sofas.

Use the crevice tool for corners, wall edges, the gap between sofa cushions, and skirting boards. Its narrow shape puts suction into tight spaces where the flat head cannot reach.

Use the upholstery tool on sofas, chairs, pillowcases, and curtains. The wide flat head with soft bristles lifts surface dust without snagging fabric. It also helps on mattresses between dust mite vacuum sessions.

Use the flexible hose on stairs. Carry the main unit in one hand. Guide the hose with the other hand. Work from the top stair to the bottom stair. That way, you do not walk over the cleaned steps.

For car seats and tight spaces where a full size vacuum feels awkward, a handheld vacuum cleaner makes the job easier.

Curtains need monthly attention. Curtains in Sri Lankan homes collect dust fast. A light pass with the upholstery tool from top to bottom once a month helps stop heavy buildup.

        Frequently asked questions

Should I use the beater brush on tiled floors?

No. Turn off the beater brush on tiles and marble. Rotating bristles scatter debris and can scratch polished surfaces. The smooth suction head handles tiled floors well.

How do I vacuum stairs safely?

Use the hose attachment and keep the main unit in one hand. Work from the top stair to the bottom stair. That way, you do not walk over what you already cleaned.

How often should I vacuum curtains in Sri Lanka?

Once a month works well. Curtains in Sri Lankan homes gather dust fast because windows often stay open for ventilation. A light pass with the upholstery tool from top to bottom helps keep buildup low.
