Plan the space and storage for your PS5 console
A PS5 console is the main PlayStation 5 machine that runs your games and connects to your TV. Sony makes a few editions, with or without a disc drive and with more or less graphics power. Before you buy one, plan how much storage your games need, where it will sit and whether you will play online. To add a player, pair one of our PS5 controllers.
PS5 console storage options
Games and updates fill the console’s own storage over time. Sony gives two ways to add more space.
The first is an M.2 SSD, a small storage card that fits into a slot inside the console. Sony says it must be a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drive with a cooling part. A heatsink, which is a metal cooler on top of the card, is the usual one. Formatting the new drive wipes everything on it, so copy any files off it first.
The second is USB extended storage, a drive you plug into a USB port. Sony asks for at least 5 Gbps speed and between 250 GB and 8 TB of space. A portable hard disk works if it meets those rules.
Plan the place too. On newer consoles, the stand for standing it upright is often sold on its own, so check the box if you want it vertical.
| Option | Good for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Console storage | The games you play now | Fills up as games and updates arrive |
| M.2 SSD | Playing more PS5 games without deleting any | Needs a heatsink and Sony’s speed rules |
| USB extended storage | Keeping games you are not playing | Needs at least 5 Gbps |
What changes the PS5 console price in Sri Lanka
The edition you pick sets most of the price. A bundle with a game or a second pad in the box adds to the total. A stand or extra storage bought later is a separate spend.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need PlayStation Plus to play online on PS5?
For most games you buy, yes. Sony says online play needs a PlayStation Plus membership. Most free-to-play games can be played online without one.
Can a PS5 play games from an external hard drive?
Partly. A PS5 can keep PS5 games on a USB drive, but it must copy them back to the console before you play. PS4 games play straight from the USB drive.
