Choose an iPad charger with enough watts

An iPad charger is a wall plug that charges your iPad through a cable. Many iPads came with a 20W USB-C plug in the box, but in some countries newer iPads are sold without a plug. Pick a plug with the same watts as the one your iPad came with, or more, then match the cable to the port. For a spare cable for a USB-C iPad, see our Type C cables.

iPad charger checks: watts, port and one plug for more devices

Start with the plug your iPad came with. Apple’s list shows a 20W plug for many recent iPads, 18W for some earlier iPad Pro models, and 12W or 10W for older iPads. If your iPad came with no plug, Apple says most USB power adapters with a USB-C cable can charge it.

Next, look at the port on the iPad. If your iPad charges through USB-C, any cable with USB-C at each end fits. Older iPads with the Lightning port need a cable with USB-C on one end and Lightning on the other. To find your model, open Settings, then General, then About.

One plug can do more than charge the iPad. Apple says a Mac USB-C power adapter can charge an iPad too, so a MacBook charger you already own works for both.

Charger Good for Note
20W USB-C plug Most recent iPads Matches the plug many iPads came with
Mac USB-C plug Sharing one plug with a MacBook Saves carrying a second plug
USB-C plug with a Lightning cable Older iPads with a Lightning port The cable needs USB-C on the plug end

What changes the iPad charger price in Sri Lanka

Watts drive the price most, so a plug strong enough to share with a MacBook costs more than a plain 20W iPad plug.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge an iPad with an iPhone charger?

Yes, Apple’s USB power adapters charge both devices. A small phone plug gives fewer watts than an iPad plug, so the iPad takes longer to fill.

What watt charger do I need for an iPad?

Look for the W number in the small print on the plug that came with your iPad, and choose that number or higher. With no plug in the box, a 20W USB-C plug is a safe start.
