How to pick a MagSafe charger for your iPhone

A MagSafe charger is a magnetic pad or stand that holds an iPhone by its back and charges it. The magnets line the phone up in the right spot, so it charges well each time you put it down. Choose one by its watts and by how many devices you want to charge. For phones without magnets, see our Qi wireless chargers.

MagSafe charger checks: watts, plug and devices

Look at the watts, and then at the wall plug. Apple says its own MagSafe charger needs a USB-C power adapter of 30W or more to reach up to 25W on iPhones that support it. Many other iPhones, older ones included, get up to 15W with a 20W adapter. The speed you get also depends on your iPhone model and how warm it is.

Many MagSafe chargers come without a wall plug, so check the box and add a USB-C power adapter if you need one. Apple says a smaller adapter still works, but the phone charges more slowly.

A 3-in-1 station charges an iPhone, AirPods and an Apple Watch at the same time from one plug. The watch needs a charging spot made for it, so check that the station lists Apple Watch support.

Some stations have a small fan inside, called active cooling. Makers say it keeps the phone cooler, so it can hold its charging speed for longer. For travel, a foldable charger closes up small for a bag. Wherever you use it, Apple advises a flat place, clear of any metal objects.

Type Good for Note
Single magnetic pad One iPhone at a desk or bedside Small and light to carry
Magnetic stand Calls and videos while it charges Holds the iPhone upright
3-in-1 station An iPhone, AirPods and an Apple Watch Check for an Apple Watch spot
Foldable charger Travel Closes up small for a bag

What changes the MagSafe charger price in Sri Lanka

Qi2 certification, higher watts and a spot for an Apple Watch push the price up. A cooling fan, a folding design and a USB-C power adapter in the box cost extra too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MagSafe the same as wireless charging?

MagSafe is Apple’s kind of wireless charging, with a ring of magnets added. The magnets hold the iPhone in place on the charger, so the charging coils always meet in the right spot.

Does a MagSafe charger work with Samsung phones?

Samsung phones have no MagSafe magnets inside, so they will not snap onto the charger without a magnetic case. Whether one charges, and how fast, depends on the charger, so check the maker’s list of phones.

Can a MagSafe charger work with any case?

Not with every case. A thick or non-magnetic case weakens the hold, and charging can slow down. Our guide on choosing a MagSafe case shows which cases work.

Can a MagSafe charger charge AirPods?

Yes, if your AirPods case supports wireless charging. Put the case on the charger. To charge an iPhone, AirPods and a watch together, choose a 3-in-1 station.
