Choose a room heater by the space you want to warm
A room heater is an electric heater that warms the air in one room. People use one in a cold bedroom at night, or at a desk in an office that feels chilly. Most blow warm air out with a small fan, and the number of watts tells you how much heat it can give. Pick a small desk heater to warm yourself, or a bigger one to warm a whole room.
Room heater checks: watts, heating type and safety
Watts (W) show how much heat a heater can make. A desk heater of a few hundred watts warms the person in front of it. A heater of about 2,000 W is made to warm a whole room.
Many small heaters use PTC ceramic heating, which is a ceramic part that heats up within seconds. A fan pushes air across it, and many heaters also turn from side to side to spread the warm air, which makers call oscillation.
Look for safety switches before you buy. A tip-over switch turns the heater off if it falls, and overheat protection turns it off if it gets too hot inside.
A thermostat lowers the power once the room reaches the warmth you set, so the heater does not stay on full power. Some smart heaters add a phone app, so you can set the warmth and a timer from across the room.
Safety bodies advise keeping a heater about 1 metre (3 feet) away from curtains, beds, sofas and anything else that can burn.
| Type | Good for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Desk heater | Warming one person at a desk | Lower watts, light to carry |
| Room fan heater | A bedroom or a small office | Higher watts, often with a thermostat |
| Smart heater | Setting times and warmth from a phone | Set it up in the maker’s app first |
What changes the room heater price in Sri Lanka
Higher watts and a wider turning angle push the price up. A thermostat, app control and extra safety switches add to it as well.
Frequently asked questions
Does a room heater use a lot of electricity?
At full power, a heater uses its rated watts for every hour it runs. So a 2,000 W heater on full for one hour uses 2 units (kWh). Add those units to your usual use and check the PUCSL tariff for the current rates.
Is it safe to leave a room heater on overnight?
Safety bodies advise against it. Do not leave a heater running while you sleep or when nobody is in the room. Warm the room first, and switch the heater off before bed.
Can I plug a room heater into an extension cord?
Safety advice is to plug a heater straight into a wall socket, not into a power strip or an extension cord. A heater draws a lot of power for a long time.
