Which extension cord suits your desk or home?

An extension cord carries power from a wall socket to where you need it, and it often gives you more sockets too. First count how many plugs you want to use and measure how far the cable must reach. Some also have USB-C and USB-A ports, so you can charge a phone or laptop without a separate charger. If you only need a foreign plug to fit a wall socket, a travel adapter is the simpler choice.

How to read an extension cord rating and sockets

Every cord has a rating in watts (W) or amps (A), and it is the most power all its sockets can take together. If the appliances you plug in add up to more than that, the cord can overheat and become a fire risk. So add up the watts printed on each appliance and keep the total under the rating.

Socket shape matters as well. The standard wall socket in Sri Lanka is type G, with three flat pins, and the older standard used round pins. Universal sockets accept UK, EU and US plug shapes, so one cord can take chargers from different countries.

For safety, look for overload and surge protection in the product details. A main switch is also handy, because it turns off every socket at once.

Type Good for Note
Power strip with sockets only TVs, lamps and home appliances Check the rating before you add big appliances
Power strip with USB ports Desks and bedside tables Charges phones without a separate charger
Tower power strip Small desks Sockets sit on the sides, so it takes less space
Smart power strip Turning sockets on and off from a phone app Needs your home Wi-Fi

What changes the extension cord price in Sri Lanka

You pay more for extra sockets, faster USB-C ports and surge protection, and also for a longer cable or app control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you connect two extension cords together?

It is not a good idea. Plugging one extension cord into another can make the plug in the wall socket overheat. Use one cord that has enough sockets for everything you need.

Can extension cords cause fires?

Yes, when they are overloaded or damaged. Unplug the cord and stop using it if you see burn marks, hear buzzing or crackling, or feel the plug getting hot.
